It used to be that a diaper bag was just as utilitarian as laptop bags used to be. We're not sure if it's the influence of brands on all of us or if it's the large number of women now in the work force, but now the choices are just as diverse as handbags.

It really doesn't matter what your style is, you can find a diaper bag that fits it. There are totes, messenger bags, and backpacks. Already, we are hearing that laptops are one of the #1 purchases for the 2009 holiday gift season. So, why not get that someone special a laptop bag to protect his or her laptop in style? If you were watching Monday Night Football tonight, you saw that even the NFL has jumped onto the mission of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Players were sporting the well-known pink ribbon on helmets, coaches had them on their lapels, and there were even pink spats on a few guys. Because of recent awareness efforts, breast cancer has one of the top survivor rates of all cancers. Summer travel is here, and for those of us who can take advantage of some of the great "recession buster" deals, there is no better time to travel. Every year hundreds of producers, directors, celebs, and the folks that fund their productions descend upon Los Angeles for the American Film Market. We've done Cannes so we thought we'd check out an event or two at the AFM. It's more understated week than Cannes, but there are still plenty of parties.

OK, so the economy is the top of everyone's mind. We continue to see television features, magazine articles, and blog postings on ways to save money. Blogs and the tabloid news have been full of comments on Michelle Obama's fashion sense. But, what can we say for the candidate Obama? We often hear presidential, but if you break that down to fashion terms, we think that translates to classic, conservative, and clean lined. Matching that look to a laptop bag isn't too hard for us to do.

This is by no means meant to be a politically charged blog. But, at the risk of mentioning anything political, we have to ask if you saw Sarah Palin's shoes at her acceptance speech? Stunning red peep toe pumps in a patent leather jumped out to me on television. (Is that shallow for a first impression of a vice presidential acceptance speech?)

We're not sure if Madame Palin has considered a laptop bag to match her sharp shoes, but we have a few in mind. How Do I Know if a Laptop Bag Fits?

It seems simple enough: how do you measure a laptop computer to see if it fits in a specific laptop bag? It doesn't make sense when you see that 14" or 17" size and then neither the length nor the width is equal to that number. Still scratching your head? Here's how it works.

The measurement that all laptop manufacturers use is the diagonal of the screen. Check out the above image. The diagonal is the measurement that goes from the upper corner to the opposite lower corner. Now that you've revisited high school geometry, how does that relate to knowing if your laptop fits in a specific laptop bag?

Here's the big news: it is a guide, but every laptop in a specific size has different dimensions because of the design of the plastic and screen dimensions. So, if you want to know if your laptop will really fit in that laptop sleeve, you need to measure the length, the width and the depth, just like a box, and then compare those measurements to the size of the bag. Maybe now it makes sense why a 15.4" Mac fits different bags than a 15.4" Dell or a 15.4" Toshiba.

Gone are the days when a guy has to carry a briefcase to work. In this day of business casual, it's completely acceptable to carry a laptop messenger.
